Yes. Although we keep the information and documents you send us on file, it is important that you maintain your own copies as well. Keep receipts, invoices, canceled checks, bank records, mileage logs, and other documents that support the income, deductions, and credits reported on your return.In most cases, tax records should be kept for at least three years after filing. Certain documents, including records related to property purchases or improvements, business expenses, and investment transactions, may need to be kept longer. We recommend saving a copy of your completed tax return and all supporting documents in a secure place.

You may need to make estimated tax payments if you receive income without taxes automatically withheld, such as self-employment income, freelance work, rental income, investment income, retirement distributions, or income from a side business. Estimated payments are generally made throughout the year to help prevent a large tax balance—and possible penalties—when you file your return. You may be able to claim a child or qualifying relative as a dependent if they meet requirements related to their relationship to you, age, residency, income, and financial support. For example, a qualifying child generally must have lived with you for more than half the year and cannot be claimed by another taxpayer. You may be able to deduct ordinary and necessary expenses related to earning your business income. Common examples include supplies, advertising, software, professional fees, business insurance, mileage, office expenses, and certain home-office costs.
